Scottish Jewellery crafted in small runs
Every piece of Tarska jewellery is made in small, considered numbers. Each stone is different, which means no two pieces are ever the same. Once a piece is gone, it’s gone.
I’ve built Tarska around the belief that jewellery should feel meaningful. Not mass produced, not trend driven. Something made slowly, from materials that carry a real sense of place and connection to Scotland.
Scottish stones
At the heart of Tarska is Scottish stone. I work exclusively with native stones sourced from across Scotland through specialist suppliers and carefully selected vintage lapidary collections. Many of Scotland’s most significant geological sites are now protected, and some of the rarest materials I work with come from collections assembled before these protections came into effect.
Since ancient times, Scotland’s stones have been prized for their beauty and their meaning. The Celts wore them as talismans. Victorian jewellers set them into silver and gold. That tradition shapes everything I do.
Each stone I work with has its own character, its own provenance, its own story.
Red Jasper from the east coast of Scotland. A grounding stone, associated with strength, stamina and protection. Known historically as the warrior’s stone.
Skye Marble, found only on the Isle of Skye. Formed over 500 million years ago, it is one of Scotland’s most distinctive stones. Said to encourage self-discipline and clarity, it has become the stone most associated with Tarska.
Isla Rosa, from the Isle of Tiree, the most westerly island of the Inner Hebrides. Estimated at three billion years old, making it one of the oldest materials on earth. A stone of prosperity and positive thought.
Chrome Spinel, from Dumfries and Galloway. A striking stone with a distinctive pattern of deep green and black. Associated with clarity and connection.
Working with Scottish stone
Every stone begins as raw material, sliced, shaped and polished entirely by hand in my studio using traditional lapidary techniques that have changed very little over centuries.
Slicing through a stone for the first time is always revealing. The colours and patterns hidden inside can be completely unexpected. From there, each piece is shaped slowly, one at a time, guided by instinct. I pay close attention to the unique character of each stone before cutting begins.
After shaping, I polish each stone through several stages. Sometimes to a soft matte finish, other times to a high shine, depending on what feels right for the piece.
Recycled gold and silver Jewellery
Every piece of Tarska jewellery is crafted from recycled gold or silver, reducing the ongoing demand for newly mined metal.
Designs begin as hand-carved wax models, worked until the form feels right. Casting and assembly of the metal components are carried out by skilled UK based artisans. All texturing, finishing and stone setting is completed by me in my studio.
Stone inlay
Setting the stone is the most precise part of the process. Even a fraction of a millimetre out can mean the stone doesn’t seat correctly, so each one is worked slowly and checked continuously until the fit is exact.
The inlay process in particular requires patience and precision, smoothing the stone until it sits completely flush with the metal, level and clean. This is what gives Tarska pieces their quiet, considered finish.
Jewellery Packaging
Every order arrives carefully wrapped in Tarska’s signature packaging. A pure new wool pouch woven in Scotland (handmade by my mum), placed in a considered black box alongside a stone card telling the story of your piece. All packaging is eco-friendly and fully recyclable.
One-of-a-kind Jewellery and limited runs
Alongside the core collection, I release one-of-a-kind pieces and limited runs a few times a year. Rare stones, singular designs, each made in the smallest of numbers and never repeated. Sign up to the Tarska newsletter to be the first to know when new pieces are available.
